Detecting Authorship, Hands, and Corrections in Historical Manuscripts. A Mixedmethods Approach towards the Unpublished Writings of an 18th Century Czech Emigré Community in Berlin (Handwriting)

When one starts working philologically with historical manuscripts, one faces important first questions involving authorship, writers’ hands andthe history of documenttransmission. These issues are especially thorny with documents remaining outside the established canon, such as privatemanuscripts, aboutwhichwehave very restrictedtext-externalinformation. In this area – so we argue – it is especially fruitful to employ a mixed-methods approach, combiningtailored automatic methods from image recognition/analysis with philological and linguistic knowledge.Whileimage analysis captureswriters’ hands, linguistic/philological research mainly addressestextual authorship;thetwo cross-fertilize and obtain a coherent interpretation which may then be evaluated against the available text-external historical evidence. Departingfrom our ‘lab case’,whichis a corpus of unedited Czechmanuscriptsfromthe archive of a small 18th century migrant community, the Herrnhuter Brüdergemeine (Brethren parish) in Berlin-Neukölln, our project has developed an assistance system which aids philologists in working with digitized (scanned) hand-written historical sources. We present its application and discuss its general potential and methodological implications

Multilingualism and Identity : Polish and Russian Influences in German Rap

Since 2019, Capital Bra is the most streamed German musician, one of the top five most streamed German musicians internationally and the only German artist in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries who has produced all in all twelve number one chart hits during one year in Germany, Austria and Switzerland (Schmidt 2019, Skrobala 2019). This article uses a corpus with approximately 100,000 tokens (word forms, punctuation, digits and abbreviations) of lyrics from the albums of four German rappers with a Polish or Russian background for an analysis of the multilingual relationships in such musicians’ lyrics and how their Slavic vocabulary may integrate into the German language. The results reveal surprisingly large dimensions of multilingual interdependence, including incorporation of vocabulary from English, Arabic and Turkish, as well as the grammatical handling of the Slavic first learned language (L1) in multilingual context. An additional point of the study is the stylometric clustering of the lyrics with the free programming environment for statistical computing called R, which shows relationships between texts and rappers.https://doi.org/10.33063/diva-437458</p

czEXILe – Lebensläufe tschechischer Flüchtlinge aus Berlin-Rixdorf des 18. Jahrhunderts

Wikimedia Deutschland, die VolkswagenStiftung und der Stifterverband haben 2017-2018 das czEXILe-Projekt unterstützt. Bei vier Lesungen im Winter-Frühling 2017-2018 wurden neun Handschriften aus Berlin-Rixdorf vorgelesen – acht Lebensläufe und eine Predigt von tschechischsprachigen Flüchtlingen aus Berlin des 18. Jahrhunderts. Heute werden die tschechischen Originale im Archiv im Böhmischen Dorf aufbewahrt. Der Sammelband beinhaltet Texte, die während der czEXILe Lesereihe behandelt wurden. Sowohl die Lebensläufe und eine Predigt in Originalschreibung inkl. Korrekturen und Fehler als auch die deutschen Übersetzungen und die wissenschaftlichen Kommentare der Forscher:innen, die an der Lesereihe teilgenommen haben oder dem Projekt nahestehen, erblicken in der Form das erste Mal das Licht der Welt. Die Kommentare umfassen vor allem die Bereiche der Geschichts- und Sprachwissenschaften. Die transliterierten und übersetzten Texte sowie die Kommentare sind aber ebenfalls für die Theologie, Religions-, Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaften relevant.Wikimedia Germany, the Volkswagen Foundation, and the Stifterverband supported the czEXILe project in 2017-2018. At four readings in winter-spring 2017-2018, nine manuscripts from Berlin-Rixdorf were read out - eight biographies and a sermon by Czech-speaking refugees from the 18th century Berlin. Today the Czech originals are kept in the archive in the Bohemian Village (Archiv im Böhmischen Dorf). The anthology contains texts that were dealt with during the czEXILe reading series. The publication includes biographies, sermons in the original spelling, including corrections and errors, the German translations, and the scientific comments of the participating researchers. The commentaries mainly cover the areas of history and linguistics. The transliterated and translated texts and the comments are also relevant for theology, religious studies, literary studies, and cultural studies.Wikimedia Deutschland, VolkswagenStiftung a Stifterverband podpořily v letech 2017-2018 projekt czEXILe. Ve čtyřech pořadech byly v zimě a na jaře 2017-2018 prezentovány formou čtení pro veřejnost rukopisy z Berlína a Rixdorfu – jednalo se o osm životopisů a jedno kázání česky mluvících uprchlíků z Berlína z doby 18. století. Dnes jsou české originály uloženy v archivu v České vesnici (Archiv im Böhmischen Dorf). Antologie obsahuje texty, které byly zpracovány v rámci projektu czEXILe: životopisy a kázání v původním pravopisu včetně oprav a chyb, německé překlady a vědecké komentáře zúčastněných badatelek a badatelů. Komentáře pokrývají především oblasti historie a lingvistiky. Přepsané a přeložené texty a komentáře jsou ale také relevantní pro teologii, religionistiku, literární vědu a kulturologii.Not Reviewe
